AYS, Inc.’s mission is to enrich the learning and well-being of children in a safe, caring and fun environment outside of the school day. AYS, a non-profit agency, began in 1980 as a grassroots after-school program at IPS School #70. AYS has since evolved into an agency encompassing all aspects of child development - from early childhood to intermediate school. AYS programs incorporate Indiana Department of Education standards, in addition to extensive art enrichment programs, a wellness initiative for students and staff, and a focus on a diverse cultural understanding. AYS joined the United Way of Central Indiana in August 2005.

Many AYS programs are accredited by the National Afterschool Association (NAA) or the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

All staff members attend a week of training before the opening of each school year. In addition, staff members attend required workshops over the course of each school year. This training includes behavior management, recognizing and reporting child abuse, and curriculum components. All staff members are certified yearly in first aid and universal precautions. AYS program directors and area coordinators are required to be certified in CPR annually. All assistants are encouraged to complete CPR certification. At least one staff member at each site is CPR certified.
